A top-down raglan in a wool that can take sea air. Written as a tutorial rather than a sized pattern: you measure yourself, you check gauge, and the cardigan comes out yours. Buttons are horn, sewn with the same yarn.
- Materials
- Aran wool, Horn buttons
- Tools
- 4.5 mm circular needles, Stitch markers, Waste yarn
- Time
- 1.7 days
- Difficulty
- Advanced
How it was made
1
Gauge, then the yoke
Knit a washed swatch in the round. The raglan starts with a provisional cast-on at the neck so the collar can be picked up later, after you know how the wool behaves.
2
Split the sleeves
Place sleeve stitches on waste yarn when the raglan depth matches your shoulder. The body continues straight. Try it on before you commit to the hem length.
3
Sleeves, one at a time
Pick up and decrease every sixth round until the forearm fits. The cuff is a 2×2 rib, slightly tighter than the body so it stays put under a coat.
4
Collar and the ends
Unpick the provisional cast-on, pick up around the neckline, and rib for 8 cm. Weave ends in the seams, wash, and block over a towel so the raglan lines sit flat.
