Dutch Design Week goes R.A.W.: rebel, authentic, and full of worth
The 26th edition in Eindhoven brought together more than 2,500 designers under a theme that asks what design is really for — from recycled-plastic houses to a piano you can walk inside.

Every October, Eindhoven turns into the busiest design studio in Europe. The 26th Dutch Design Week opened on 17 October and ran until 25 October. It brought work by more than 2,500 designers to venues across the city.
The theme: R.A.W.
This year's theme, R.A.W., stands for Rebel, Authentic, Worth. It's a call to strip design back to its intentions and ask who it serves, what it costs and whether it is honest about its materials. In practice, the festival read like a stress test of good ideas.
Highlights worth the trip
House of Lights. TAM Industries 3D-printed a structure from recycled plastic and designed it to be fully recyclable again. It is part architecture and part argument that temporary buildings don't have to become waste.
A piano you can walk into. Antoon Versteegde and Bart van Dongen built an electric grand piano inside a bamboo structure, with each of its 72 keys wired to its own speaker. Playing a chord becomes a spatial experience, with sound moving around you instead of coming from one box.
Biodesign Warehouse. Emma van der Leest's space gathered designers who grow materials instead of mining them: think mycelium, bacteria and algae. Biodesign has moved from curiosity to a genuine strand of practice at DDW, and the warehouse format made the work feel practical rather than precious.
transparent.citizen. Mees Boeijen's project was one of the works the organisers singled out ahead of opening, a sign that the festival's idea of "material" now reaches well beyond wood, clay and plastic.
The graduates
As always, a highlight was the Design Academy Eindhoven graduation show, with more than 200 students presenting. It's where you see the next five years of design arrive early. The Dutch Design Awards named a Class of 2026 of 15 talents.
What it says about design right now
Three moods ran through Eindhoven this year. One is circularity as a starting point, not a selling point. Another is sound and touch competing with screens for attention. The third is a renewed respect for making things by hand, even when the hand is guiding a robot or a printer.
For your home, R.A.W. translates into a simple test: does the object tell the truth about what it is? Bold blocks of colour, visible construction and graphic shapes that don't pretend to be anything else have a pleasing honesty. That's a good rule for choosing art, too.
